What's this
astronomy group all about
By Rock Mallin
I had recent inquiries about our group. Many people
found a confusion between the different groups in our area. I would like to
explain to all about our standing as OAOG (Ottawa Valley Astronomy and
Observers Group).
OAOG was created as an astronomy group with very little politics if any at
all. It was intended to help out and reach all interested in astronomy and
its related sciences. The more the group grew, the more some of us realized
that such group was indeed needed in the Ottawa region. With this in mind,
the concept has been the same since its beginnings back in 1994. The main
goal is to be part of a helping group of people interested in sharing the
night skies, and helping out the newcomers interested in astronomy. At the
same time, it provides a resource of information to use and share. It
provides on hand help to those who needs it, with a unbiased fashion, and
without prejudice.
From a beginner to intermediate to advance, all are the same in OAOG. This
way it is less intimidating for some who have a harder time understanding
the concept of the universe and astronomy in general. Having everyone on a
voluntary basis, the forward movement of this
group has some of the most dedicated and passionate amateur astronomers
available anywhere. Each has it's own specialties, ready to share
experiences and knowledge about astronomy with those who need it the most.
OAOG has never been affiliated with other groups, clubs or societies and
probably never will. The hard work by its volunteers are a proof of success
with the idea of such astronomy group in the region. That's why most will
find a "different type" of amateur astronomers here. We usually observe as a
group, making this a success at what we all do. From Sidewalk astronomy to
observing sessions around the region, OAOG has established its own observing
sites to all who requires it to do observing. Many hours, and many mileage
has been logged to find the ultimate spots to observe not mentioning
negotiations with owners to use their land for OAOG members' benefit.
From a simple binoculars owner to a fully computerized observatory class
telescope owner, all are welcome in OAOG. If you do not have a telescope,
you are among some of the finest hands to help you with astronomy, and you
are part of OAOG as much of all who have telescopes. If you have an interest
in astronomy, you are OAOG. We are here to help in your curiosity and
exploration of the night sky wonders.
It is important to reaffirm our identity among others as OAOG members. OAOG
is different, and we do things in a casual way to make people feel
comfortable among all of us who has an interest in astronomy. I hope this
simple explanation will help newcomers understand the concept behind OAOG as
a independent group, and being apart from many other organizations related
to astronomy.
Over the years as OAOG has grown to a unexpected proportion, the need to
have a coordinating committee was unavoidable. That's what OCV is. It stands
for : "Oaog Coordinating Volunteers". It was created with the purpose of
organizing activities for the group, and to coordinate contacts with a
representative of the community. When negotiation are needed, it's OCV that
coordinates, makes phone calls and have endless meetings to have a organized
group such as OAOG function in the right
path. Careful planning are routinely done by these five members of OAOG's
OCV. The reason to have five members is simple. When voting on new ideas,
having different opinions, the majority wins such as 3 out of 5. It's a
matter of keeping things simple too.
Any request for activities should be sent to the OCV to coordinate all
activities. If a group of students or a group of seniors needs an astronomy
presentation, it is advisable to send the request to one of
the five OCV or simply email your request at: ocv@oaog.ca
OCV is in part responsible to different activities in the OAOG. Each has a
function to fulfill and once in a while, OCV gets together for an update on
what's going on and plan our upcoming events. I hope this will clear the
questions you had about the OCV.
