About the OAOG

The Ottawa Valley Astronomy & Observers Group (O.A.O.G.) was created in 1994
by local amateur astronomers Rock Mallin and Don Fougere who had a passion to share their enthusiasm with
the public. We are a very casual, non-profit bilingual group located in
Ottawa, Ontario. What we have is enthusiasm and knowledge of the night sky
and a willingness to share with the public. Our goal is to bring as many
people together to learn astronomy. We are not a club or society and
therefore have no fee. Whether you are a novice stargazer or a seasoned
amateur astronomer, grab a friend and feel free to join us.
We offer observing sites that span a radius of two hours
around the Ottawa region. Some of our sites are just a short drive away for
convenience, while other sites are located well-away from all sources of
light pollution, and offer a truly spectacular observing experience.
Astronomy is a fun and thrilling hobby, but don't feel it's a must to have
to spend a fortune in telescopes and accessories. In fact, there are always
observers who will be happy to share their equipment. All it really takes in
the hobby is an interest! You are welcome to join-in, regardless of how much
or little you know about astronomy.
We love sidewalk astronomy!
The OAOG holds many activities including out-of-town star parties, but it is
very much addicted to bringing astronomy to the public! When the Moon and/or
planets are up on a clear evening, you will often find us at busy shopping
center parking lots. We provide a variety of telescopes of all sizes and
types. We welcome any passerby who happens to cross our path to come and see
the wonderful sights that the Universe has to offer. Check out sharp
close-ups of the craters of the Moon and see the bright planets Jupiter,
Saturn, Venus and Mars. Peer deep into our galaxy at colourful double-stars
and rich star clusters, and lots more too! On these nights, we also provide
free hand-outs packed with useful information about astronomy and observing.
To find out exactly when and where the next sidewalk astronomy session will
be, keep a close-eye on our Yahoo Group Discussion list here:

Whether you are a novice astronomer or a seasoned astronomer grab a friend
and feel free to join us in our observing. For more information, please

free and has many rewards!
